Spring Start Up Tips
by: Bob Dube

  1. General washing making sure to remove any fallout (bird dropping, tree sap, bugs, etc) making sure all surfaces are dry so you don’t end up with water spotting on any horizontal surfaces. Also clean the tires and wheels from any road grime, apply a good quality tire dressing.
  2. Interior Care just as important as exterior, make sure to use a good quality leather cleaner and/or conditioner (if not done when putting your vehicle in winter storage).
  3. Apply a coat of wax to the exterior painted and plated surfaces (if not done when putting your vehicle into winter storage).
  4. Perform a Lube, Oil and Filter change and/or visual inspection of all fluid levels making sure no leaks developed over the winter months. (LOF only needed if not done when putting your vehicle into winter storage).
  5. Make sure the engine coolant protection is to at least at –20 degrees Fahrenheit. Antifreeze-Coolant (green) should be changed every 2 years or 24,000 miles whichever comes first; Dex-Coolent (pink) should be changed every 5 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first for GM Vehicles.
  6. Note: The reason we recommend protection to -20 degrees is because that is the proper antifreeze to water mixture for maximum protection for heat transfer in the summer. Antifreeze also has rust preventing and lubricating properties for moving parts such as the water pump in your engine. If you run with just water in the radiator the water pump could fail. The reason they fail is the lack of lubrication needed for the bearing to survive. The cooling system will also rust causing internal damage to all cooling system components.
  7. Recharge your battery. A simple 10 amp battery charger used every 30 days for about 16 hours when the vehicle is not used will save a lot of heartaches, a locked radio, loss of memory in the computer, engine idle needs to be relearned, etc. A BatteryMinder charger (available in out Parts Dept) is the better way to go, it will charge your battery without overcharge, while desulphating your battery, These chargers can be used for 6 months without removal.
  8. Apply a silicone lubricant to all the weatherstrips, spraying the rag with lubricant then wiping it onto the weatherstrip (3M’s part#08897 is a great product).
