Winter Storage Tips
by: Bob Dube

1. General Washing making sure to remove any fallout (bird dropping, tree sap, bugs, etc) making sure all surfaces are dry so you don’t end up with water spotting on any horizontal surfaces. Also clean the tires and wheels from any road grime, apply a good quality tire dressing.

2. Interior Care just as important as exterior, make sure to use a good quality leather cleaner and/or conditioner. In high moisture area’s making sure to install a desiccant to protect against mold.

3. Apply a coat of wax to the exterior painted and plated surfaces.

4. Perform a Lube, Oil and Filter change. (Contaminates and moisture left in the engine that is in storage for more then 30 days is very harmful to the engine parts).

5. Make sure the engine coolant protection is to at least at –20 degrees Fahrenheit. Antifreeze-Coolant (green) should be changed every 2 years or 30,000 miles whichever comes first; Dex-Coolent (pink) should be changed every 5 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first for GM Products.

6. Recharge your battery every 30 days (a discharged battery in freezing temperatures will crack and/or short out) then need replacing. A simple 10 amp battery charger used every 30 days will save a lot of heartaches in the spring like, a locked radio, loss of memory in the computer, engine idle needs to be relearned, etc. A BatteryMinder charger is the better way to go, it will charge your battery without overcharge, while desulphating your battery, most of these chargers can be used for 6 months without removal.

7. Install fuel stabilizer to a full tank of gas, making sure you run the engine for at least 15 min. to get the stabilizer to all parts of the fuel system (Sta-Bil is a great product).

8. Apply a silicone lubricant to all the weatherstrips, spraying the rag with lubricant then wiping it onto the weatherstrip (3M’s part#08897 is a great product).

9. The best thing you can do for your vehicle is taking it out for a drive on that dry sunny day, in those winter months. Driving the vehicle a minimum of 10 miles, it takes at least that long for all the engine and suspension parts to come to full operating temperature. If you don’t drive or start your vehicle you risk the chance of engine damage, scored piston cylinder walls, etc.

10. If your vehicle is going to be in storage for six months or more without doing the things I have outlined above and the vehicle is just going to sit. Please call me and I will mail, fax or e-mail you a long list of things that need to be done to protect your vehicle while in storage.
